To Kill A Mockingbird

Image
To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a persons conscience. One must lie under certain circumstances and at all times when one can't do anything about it. But it didn't matter because i knew he was fighting, he was fighting me back. We were still equals. They've done it before and they did it tonight and they will do it again and when they do it - seems that only children weep. Clowns are not sad, it's folks that laugh at them.

Reclaim Your Heart

Image
Reclaim Your Heart Yasmin Mogahed However the problem wasn’t with the vase, or even that the vases kept breaking. The problem was that I kept putting them on the edge of tables.  Yet the people who broke me were not to blame any more than gravity can be blamed for breaking the vase. We can’t blame the laws of physics when a twig snaps because we leaned on it for support. The twig was never created to carry us. Our weight was only meant to be carried by God. We are told in the Quran: “…whoever rejects evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And God hears and knows all things.” (Qur’an, 2: 256) My mistake was not in having expectations; as humans, we should never lose hope. The problem was in *where* I was placing those expectations and that hope. At the end of the day, my hope and expectations were not being placed in God. My hope and expectations were in people, relationships, means. Ultimately, my hope was in thi...

A long way gone

Image
A long way gone Ishmael Beah Families who had walked hundreds of miles told how relatives had been killed and their houses burned. Some people felt sorry for them and offered them places to stay, but most of the refugees refused, because they said the war would eventually reach our town.  Later we learned that the man had tried to escape with his family and the rebels had shot at his vehicle, killing all his family. The only thing that consoled him, for a few seconds at least, was when the woman who had embraced him, and now cried with him, told him that at least he would have the chance to bury them. Young boys were immediately recruited, and the initials RUF were carved wherever it pleased the rebels, with a hot bayonet. This not only meant that you were scarred for life but that you could never escape from them, because escaping with the carving of the rebels’ initials was asking for death, as soldiers would kill you without any questions and militant civili...

1984

Image
1984 George Orwell It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws It was always at night — the arrests invariably happened at night. The sudden jerk out of sleep, the rough hand shaking your shoulder, the lights glaring in your eyes, the ring of hard faces round the bed. In the vast majority of cases there was no trial, no report of the arrest. People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word. To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone — to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Bro...

How to be idle

Image
How To Be Idle Tom Hodgkinson We buy alarm clocks voluntarily. For all modern society’s promises of leisure, liberty and doing what you want, most of us are still slaves to a schedule we did not choose. Andrew Townsend, argued that to use mere force of law to impress the new work ethic on the workers ‘gives too much trouble, requires too much violence and makes too much noise’. Better and easier, he maintained, to keep them hungry. ‘Hunger, on the contrary, is not only a pressure which is peaceful, silent and incessant, but as it is the most natural motive for work and industry, it also provokes the most peaceful efforts.’ Institutions fear idle populations because an Idler is a thinker and thinkers are not a welcome addition to most social situations. ‘Convalescing’ is a word one doesn't hear much these days. It’s as if we have banished the notion that time is a healer, and replaced it with a battery of procedures and products designed to skip convalesce...

The Little Prince

Image
The Little Prince Antoine De Saint-Exupery  He did not know how the world is simplified for kings. To them, all men are subjects. “I am drinking,” replied the tippler, with a lugubrious air. “Why are you drinking?” demanded the little prince. “So that I may forget,” replied the tippler. “Forget what?” inquired the little prince, who already was sorry for him. “Forget that I am ashamed,” the tippler confessed, hanging his head. “Ashamed of what?” insisted the little prince, who wanted to help him. “Ashamed of drinking!” The tippler brought his speech to an end, and shut himself up in an impregnable silence. “All men have the stars,” he answered, “but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent. You– you alone– will have the stars a...

The Soul of Rumi: A New Collection of Ecstatic Poems

Image
The Soul of Rumi: A New                                    Collection of Ecstatic Poems   Rumi  We watch a sunlight dust dance, and we try to be that lively, but nobody knows what music those particles hear. Each of us has a secret companion musician to dance to. You’ve been stony for too many years. Try something different. Surrender Pain comes from seeing how arrogant you’ve been, and pain brings you out of this conceit. We are misquoted texts, made right when you say us. Consider how Satan swallowed soul poison, and be grateful that you taste only the sweetness of being warned. The moon stays bright when it doesn’t avoid the night. Love tears its shirt. Mind begins the sewing repair. Morning opens a door with help for those who don’t...

The startup nation

Image
The startup nation Dan Senor & Saul Singer By isolating Israel, Agassi told us with an impish smile, Israel’s adversaries had actually created the perfect laboratory to test ideas.  in addition to boasting the highest density of start-ups in the world (a total of 3,850 start-ups, one for every 1,844 Israelis),6 more Israeli companies are listed on the NASDAQ exchange than all companies from the entire European continent adversity, like necessity, breeds inventiveness Israeli culture and regulations reflect a unique attitude to failure, one that has managed to repeatedly bring failed entrepreneurs back into the system to constructively use their experience to try again, rather than leave them permanently stigmatized and marginalized.  The Israelis were making the twenty-hour trip between Tel Aviv and California so frequently that they seemed omnipresent, always ready to corner an executive in the hallway or even a restroom—anything to argue their c...

Life of Pi

Image
Life of Pi Yann Martel  I would turn Portugal into a fiction. That’s what fiction is about, isn't it, the selective transforming of reality? The twisting of it to bring out its essence?  I have nothing to say of my working life, only that a tie is a noose, and inverted though it is, it will hang a man nonetheless if he’s not careful. A good zoo is a place of carefully worked-out coincidence: exactly where an animal says to us, “Stay out!” with its urine or other secretion,  we say to it, “Stay in!” with our barriers. Under such conditions of diplomatic peace, all animals are content and we can relax and have a look at each other. To  choose  doubt  as  a  philosophy  of  life  is  akin to  choosing  immobility  as  a  means  of transportation. Life  will  defend itself no matter how small it is. Whatever the reason for wanting to escape, sane or insane, zoo detracto...

The Garden of The Prophet

Image
The Garden of The Prophet Khalil Gibran Pity the nation that welcomes its new ruler with trumpetings, and farewells him with hootings, only to welcome another with trumpetings again Pity the nation divided into fragments, each fragment deeming itself a nation In your waking dream, when you are hushed and listening to your deeper self, your thoughts, like snow- flakes, fall and flutter and garment all the sounds of your spaces with white silence. “And what are waking dreams but clouds that bud and blossom on the sky-tree of your heart? And what are your thoughts but the petals which the winds of your heart scatter upon the hills and its fields? “And even as you wait for peace until the formless within you takes form, so shall the cloud gather and drift until the Blessed Fingers shape its grey desire to little crystal suns and moons and stars. When darkness is upon you, say: ‘This darkness is dawn not yet born To be a garden without walls, a vineyard without a guardi...

My Stroke of Insight

Image
My Stroke of Insight  Jill Bolte Taylor Every brain has a story and this is mine. For any two of us to communicate with one another,  we must share a certain amount of common reality. Although each hemisphere is unique in the specific types of information it processes, when the two hemispheres  are connected to one another, they work together to generate a single seamless perception of the world.  By the time a message reaches our cerebral cortex for  higher thinking, we have already placed a “feeling” upon how we view that stimulation – is this pain or is this  pleasure? Although many of us may think of ourselves as thinking creatures that feel, biologically we are feeling creatures that think.   Although most of us are rarely aware of it, our sensory receptors are designed to detect information at  the energy level. Because everything around us - the air we breathe, even the materials we use to build w...
